Peter Brennan

It is with regret that we advise of the passing of Peter Brennan. Peter died on 13th January 2012, the very day of his sixty-fifth birthday.

Peter joined the TAB on 4th January 1972 as a Branch Auditor. Although he worked in the Internal Audit Division for some time and on the Field Staff he was best known for his career in the Control Centre. Peter’s temperament was well suited to this environment which required sound and exact judgement, the monitoring of several events and issues simultaneously and the supervision of staff. Peter was known for his calm and courteous manner in pressure situations.

Peter’s life changed forever on 21st October 2004, when he fell whilst clearing leaves from his home guttering. This rendered Peter a quadriplegic. Despite his disability, he mastered his circumstances and became extremely proficient with a voice activated computer which allowed him to maintain contact with his many friends.

The high standing of Peter Brennan was confirmed when some 600 people, drawn from every area of the TAB, attending a benefit night held at Canterbury Racetrack the year after his accident.

A large crowd attended his funeral on 18th January. All would have agreed, we are poorer for his passing.

OCTOBER 2011

MOLLIE AUDET

The TAB family lost one of its true ‘originals’ with the passing of Mollie Audet on 18th October 2011.

Mollie worked hard for her fellow agents and this was reflected in her becoming the first female Life Member of the Agents’ Association. The Agents’ Association magazine “Keeping Tabs” gave Mollie’s Life Membership front page news in its October 1988 issue with the headline “Audet gets life”.

Mollie was a casual payer/seller at Manly Branch (Branch Number 1) on the first day of TAB operations, 9th December 1964. She later transferred to Rockdale Branch where she worked for a short time before joining the permanent staff on 29th March 1965. She worked at a number of branches in the area and was part of the all-women branch at Kogarah (Manager Anne Hancock) which was given prominence in newspapers at the time.

A long time resident of Kingsgrove, Mollie was attracted to the prospect of running her local agency. She applied and was successful. Kingsgrove Agency opened on 15th July 1966 with Mollie as Agent and here she remained until her retirement on 29th November 1990,

One of the finest few.

BETTY MOONEY

It is with regret that we advise of the passing, in Western Australia, of Betty Mooney. Betty died on 12th October 2011.

One of the true characters of the early years of the TAB, she was especially well known in the Eastern Suburbs.

Betty joined the permanent staff on 21st September 1965 and was for a long period manager of Double Bay before she became an Agent in January 1979. In February 1992 she resigned ‘to get a life’ and has spent most of the time since living in Western Australia.

The TAB ‘community’ is poorer with her passing.

ROBYN SCHOTT

It is with regret that the death of Robyn Schott, on 26th September 2011, is recorded.

Robyn joined the TAB on 2nd February 1976 where she very quickly became a vital member of the Printing Section. She was trained and then operated the various typesetting machines used to produce documents ranging from wall lists (she must have typed millions of racing animal names) through to quality documents such as TAB Annual Reports. She held a number of titles including Typist and VariTypist and was finally known as Art Preparation Officer.

She had an ideal temperament for her job and never got flustered or angry even under the pressure of conflicting deadlines and excitable managers. A real “mother-hen”, she always cared for the staff working with her.

She was highly principled - never tainted by scandal. An anecdote - she once told (former south Sydney footballer) Mario Fenech that his shorts were too short for the girls in the office when he was up the ladder doing electrical work. Always changed the reindeers at Christmas in the entry foyer’s settee to more appropriate positions other than the ones they were placed in by the Printroom boys!

Robyn transferred to Granville when the Section relocated from Ultimo and stayed until 28th December 2000 when the Printing Section was, sadly, closed.

JUNE 2011

KATHLEEN (KATH) BUCHAN

It is with regret that the death of former TAB Agent Kath Buchan on 6th June 2011, is advised.

Kath had a long time association with the TAB joining as a casual employee in November 1966. She was appointed as an Agent in August 1974, and held this position until she retired in June 1998.

She was best known at Balgowlah agency where she worked at the time of her retirement.

BOB DAVIS

Bob Davis died early May 2011, aged in his early 70’s.

He was regarded as a real character by all who knew him. Bob joined TAB as Assistant Branch Manager in late 1964. Following a number of promotions in Branches and Telephone Betting, he was part of the first intake to be trained as computer programmers in the Automation and Research Division in 1966.

His initial task was to modify the IBM Disk Operating System to facilitate the running of the initial betting system; a task which took several years in conjunction with senior programmers from IBM. He thus became the TAB’s first Systems Programmer monitoring system capacity and performance and oversight of the fledgling Management Information System.

Bob resigned from TAB in late 1978 to join Lotto Management Services, where he filled a number of IT and Operations roles until the 1990’s. He then returned to TAB working at a number of TAB agencies until just prior to his death.

Bob married the lovely Wendy whom he met whilst she worked in TAB Control Centre. Wendy pre-deceased Bob by 5 years.

In addition to his quick intelligence, Bob will be remembered for his love of games. He specialized in rugby league (his bedroom featured a black and white wallpaper in honour of Wests), euchre and darts. He loved nothing more than a game and a beer (preferably at the same time) with a group of friends.

MAY 2011

PETER WEIR

We have just become aware of the sad passing of Peter Weir some three months’ ago. Peter died on 22nd February 2011.

He joined the TAB’s branch staff on 30th January 1968 and progressed to become a branch manager. He was appointed to the field staff and initially posted to the North Coast region later returning to Sydney. On 26th October 1979 he was appointed as Agent, Campbelltown where he remained until his retirement in July 2000.

MARY EDWARDS

It is with regret that we advise of the passing of Mary Edwards on 25th May 2011. Mary, who joined as a casual employee in May 1967, was TAB Agent at Wauchope from 1971 until her retirement in November 1994. Mary’s husband Brian is the former North Coast Regional Manager.

APRIL 2011

2011 TAB Inter-Dominion 20/20 Cricket Challenge

Four teams, New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland and Victoria, competed this year in Melbourne under the sponsorship of First Option Credit Union. Played 30th March to 2nd April.

Game 1 NSW v NZ
Melbourne lived up to the reputation of having all four seasons in one day. The day started with rain and overcast conditions. However, the match started on time and after half an hour it was blue sky with not a cloud to be seen.

NSW won the toss and batted first to compile 108 off their 20 overs. Main contributors were Rob Banks 32 and Jeff Lee 19.

NZ began their run chase and were well placed at 2 for 65 after 10 overs. Then the pressure got to them resulting in them being all out for 85. Main contributor for NZ was Brendan Popplewell (Sky Channel Tipster) with 41. NSW bowler was Ben Folkard with 3 for 8 off 4 overs and Joel Wilson 2 for 7 off 1 over.

Result NSW won by 23 runs.

Game 2 Vic v Qld
Victoria won the toss and were a little shaky at 7 for 50 of 14 overs when Anthony Tressider came in to make 19 not out and push the score to 9 for 82.

Queensland began their run chase but were never in it thanks to some good bowling from Matt Watson 1 for 15 off 4 overs and Anthony Tressider 2 for 13 off 4 overs. C Silvapulle cleaned up the rest with 6 for 6 off 4 overs. Qld were all
out for 62 runs.

Result Vic won by 20 runs.

Game 3 NSW v QLD
Qld won the toss and batted first. They compiled 105 runs off their 20 overs. Best was M Gomersall 40 and S Wadwania 38 not out.

NSW began their run chase well and got the required runs in 11.5 overs for the loss of one wicket. Jeff Lee 56 not out and Ben Folkard 37 not out were the main contributors.

Result NSW won by 10 wickets.

Game 4 Vic v NZ
Victoria won the toss and batted first to make 117 off their 20 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Best was M Martin 56 and Anthony Tressider 40 not out.

New Zealand didn't play their best resulting in them being all out for 49 runs.

Result VIC won by 68 runs.

Game 5 QLD v NZ
QLD won the toss and batted first and compiled an incredible 168 runs off their 20 overs. Best contributors were S Derkson 46 and A Nair 109 not out. The old adage catches win matches was never more evident when A Nair was dropped first ball he faced.

New Zealand started their huge run chase well but only managed to get 116 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Best for NZ were S Burgess 50 not out and A Monk 30 not out.

Result QLD won by 52 runs.

Game 6 NSW v VIC
NSW won the toss and tried to match Queensland's big total from Game 5 but were only able to amass 158 runs off their overs for the loss of 2 wickets. Main contributors were Jeff Taylor 94 and Simon Arthur 29 runs.
Once again the task of chasing such a huge total was beyond any team and Victoria were all out for 83 runs.

Result NSW won by 75 runs.
The outcome of these preliminary matches was that NSW played VIC in the final.

Game 7 NSW v VIC (FINAL)
NSW won the toss and of course batted first. NSW saved their worst performance for last and were 6 for 20 off 6 overs, eventually finishing all out for 63 in the 20th.

Having so few runs to protect NSW had Victoria 1 for 18 off 8 overs. Victoria proved best and finished 3 for 65 off 16.2 overs.

Result VIC won by 8 wickets.

Congratulations to Victoria and special mention to Matt Watson for organizing a great carnival.

FEBRUARY 2011

Bernard (Bernie) Webb

It is with regret that we advise of the passing of another TAB ‘identity’, Bernie Webb. Bernie passed away on 4th February 2011 at the too young age of 58.

In the early days of the TAB, a great deal of printing was done in-house using a Gestetner duplicating machine. It was difficult to get the work done satisfactorily as the staff involved hated the noisy and dirty work and were looking for the first opportunity to move to other duties. Then in 1968, General Manager John Robertson enlisted a young neighbour of his, 16 year old Bernard Webb, to fill the position.

Bernie loved the role of Gestetner Operator and took a real pride in his work. Friendly and co-operative, he soon made a lot of friends and established himself in a printing career which was to last until December 2000 when the then management decided to outsource the whole printing function.

He had only one eye and was profoundly deaf but never let that be a handicap or stop him from being involved in anything that was going. Many of his workmates recalled stories of adventures with his glass eye – searches for it at Wentworth Park after football training and in swimming pools. Bernie always got a huge laugh out of secretly depositing his eye in a workmate’s beer and enjoying the reaction.

John Wade (also profoundly deaf) spoke at his funeral as a workmate and friend. He said “Bernard remains the ‘Father of the TAB Printing Section’. He always arrived first in the morning and was last to leave work regardless of the time.”

Former TAB employee Ray McIntyre summed up a lot of people’s thoughts – “I have very fond memories of Bernie and his antics. A great person who overcame challenges that most of us couldn't imagine.” To paraphrase a comment by another former TAB staffer, Danny Lee, “If we could face life with the fullness and toughness he did in spite of his disabilities I think we would all be better people for it.”

JANUARY 2011

Carol McDonald

It is with sadness that the passing of another TAB veteran is advised. Carol McDonald died on 9th January 2011.

Carol joined the TAB's casual staff in 1966 working as a comptometrist in District Centre 1 which received and transmitted betting information for 1/3 of the metropolitan outlets. She also worked casually in the Race List Section and, becoming a permanent staff member in 1976, ended up being manager of this area.

In 1984 she was appointed as Agent Hunters Hill and she worked here for a number of years before moving to, Surry Hills. After a nasty hold-up in which she was assaulted, she made the wise decision to retire in July 1997 and enjoy a well-earned break from a long working career.

Diagnosed with cancer several years ago she fought the disease with bravery and determination and outlived all those who had similar illnesses detected around the same time. A great planner, she organised her own funeral to lessen the burden on her family.
