First Option Credit Union

How to Avoid Fees and Charges

There are a number of ways in which you can avoid paying fees or charges:

  • Use Internet Banking and Phonelink. There are no set up or ongoing fees for Internet Banking or Phonelink and you have free access to the following services:
    • view details of balances and transactions;
    • transfer funds between your own First Option accounts;
    • transfer funds to another First Option account;
    • transfer funds externally (Internet Banking only); and
    • pay your bills using BPAY.
  • Use your Visa debit card wherever the Visa symbol is displayed. Instead of selecting 'Savings', press the 'Credit' button, and enter your pin or sign for the purchase. There are no charges for credit transactions, unlike EFTPOS. You are using your own funds, but you're not charged for the transaction. This way you can save up your free EFTPOS transactions for when you want to take cash out with your purchase!
  • Make regular payments using Direct Debit. It is automatic, and cheaper than withdrawing cash from an ATM to pay a bill.
  • Use EFTPOS to make cash withdrawals when you are making a purchase. This means you pay only for one transaction, rather than for a separate ATM withdrawal.
  • Use ATMs wisely and sparingly. Plan your cash withdrawals. If you withdraw large amounts less frequently from ATMs, you will incur less charges.
  • Always ensure you have sufficient cleared funds in your account to cover all your payments and withdrawals. Doing so means you will avoid paying an overdrawn account fee or a cheque or direct debit dishonour fee for insufficient funds.
