Important security alert - "Vishing"

Security alert to all members

A new vishing scam has been known to target unsuspecting credit union members in an attempt to get access to personal account details, PINs and card details. Please be alert.

What’s vishing?

A “vishing” scam is a variation on a typical email “phishing” scam, only this time the scam is conducted over the phone. The term is a combination of "voice" and phishing. The object of the scam is to trick you into revealing personal information like your debit/credit card numbers, Internet Banking details or other information used in identify fraud.

How does it work?

Typically if you’re the subject of a vishing scam you’ll receive a phone call with an automated recording that purports to be from your credit union or bank. The recording will typically claim that your card has been subject to fraudulent activity or that your account has had unusual activity of some sort. You may then be asked to call back on a designated phone number. When you do, you will be asked to input your card or account details using the phone’s key pad. Once this information is obtained, you may even speak to a person posing as a “representative” or you may never get to a representative, and are placed on hold. Meanwhile, the damage is done and the scammers will try to use the information you have disclosed to steal money.

Why is vishing being used?

Now that most of us are more aware of email phishing scams, criminals are using other means to try and trick us into revealing personal information. In this case, they’re using a telephone call. Vishing typically makes use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which allows people to talk over computer lines, and can therefore allow for multiple dialling of numbers at the same time. Scammers typically call everyone they can and hope that some people will respond.
Be alert

We will never ask you to confirm your card number or Internet Banking details over the phone. If you get a vishing call just hang up and report the scam to us as soon as you can.
